In recent years, and with increasing intensity following the outbreak of the pandemic, patterns of mobility from cities to mountainous areas have emerged. An increasing number of urban residents have chosen to relocate to valley communities\u2014often marginalised and depopulated\u2014in order to escape cities perceived as unhealthy and unsafe, to develop new activities, or to take advantage of remote working in a daily life closer to nature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Proximity fosters social ties that structure individuals\u2019 everyday lives; however, the role of and relationship to geographical, relational, and everyday dimensions can vary depending on historical contexts and on specific economic, social, political, and cultural conditions. To what extent is the socio-economic and territorial marginalisation affecting many Alpine regions linked to the weakening, over recent decades, of local services\u2014such as shops, caf\u00e9s, post offices, schools, and healthcare facilities\u2014within these territories? And how might the current debate around \u201cthe commons\u201d provide the basis for their regeneration?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This volume seeks to address these questions through contributions that, from diverse perspectives, examine the role of local services in the historical trajectories and contemporary realities of mountain communities. At the same time, it gives voice to a wide range of experiences shaped by the varied and multifaceted forms and functions assumed by local services.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n
